HGMH Expands Physiatry Services to Outpatients

Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital (HGMH) is pleased to announce the expansion of its Physiatry program to include outpatient consultations, increasing access to specialized rehabilitation care for residents of Glengarry and surrounding communities.
Physiatry is a medical specialty focused on improving function, mobility, and quality of life for individuals recovering from stroke, neurological injury, and other disabling conditions.
Since the fall of 2025, Physiatry services at HGMH have supported referred inpatients as part of the hospital's commitment to enhancing rehabilitation and recovery services. Building on the success of that program, patients can now be referred for outpatient consultations with Dr. Jacqueline Cochrane, a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with advanced training in stroke rehabilitation and spasticity management.
"Expanding Physiatry services to include outpatients is an important step in ensuring patients have access to the specialized rehabilitation care they need, closer to home," said Robert Alldred-Hughes, President and CEO of HGMH. "This service supports patients throughout their recovery journey and reduces the need to travel to larger centres for assessment and follow-up care. We are so happy to have Dr. Cochrane as part of our medical team"
Many patients continue to face challenges long after being discharged from hospitals following a stroke or neurological injury. Physiatry services help identify barriers to recovery and develop individualized treatment plans to maximize independence and participation in daily life.
"My outpatient practice is focused on helping patients overcome the physical and functional challenges that can arise following a stroke or other neurological condition," said Dr. Jacqueline Cochrane. "This includes supporting individuals with mobility, cognition, communication, fatigue, pain, and their return to work or driving. I also provide spasticity management which includes botulinumtoxin injections for eligible patients, as well as functional assessments andrehabilitation planning to help patients achieve their recovery goals andmaintain the highest possible quality of life."
The expansionof Physiatry services is another example of HGMH's ongoing commitment tobringing specialized healthcare services closer to home and improving access tocare for the communities it serves.
Referrals are accepted from physicians and nurse practitioners for patients with OHIP or RAMQ coverage. Healthcare providers can access the Physiatry referral form onthe website, www.hgmh.on.ca, and submit completed referrals by fax to 613-525-0147.
